So you heard about goal setting and maybe have even written down your business and professional goals already. To take it one step further, maybe you are one of the very few who reviews their goals regularly — monthly, weekly, or even daily. So why do so many people never achieve their goals? Here’s 3 very specific reasons why that you may have not thought about recently…
1. Are Your Professional Goals Even YOURS?
What do I mean by that question? Well let’s see…
I don’t know about you, but when I was growing up, my parents wanted me to pursue one of three careers – either to be a lawyer, a doctor, or an engineer. And so with that type of upbringing, guess what type of professional goals I had in my head while in high school? Exactly! I graduated as an engineer and worked in that field for the next 7 years out of college.
Now I set pretty high professional goals in that field, for example… I set a goal to become one of the best young engineers in my firm. I achieved that. Then I set a goal to become a lead engineer, then a project engineer… I achieved those as well. Then I set bigger goals, like someday having my own engineering firm, an owner employing other engineers… then BANG! A road block. For some reason, I felt like I had a foot on the brake… then I realized, hey… I was not going after something I really wanted. It was actually a goal of my dad’s! I was going after something that I thought I had to do… but deep inside, I really didn’t want to go after it.
One of the hidden reasons why so many people are not achieving their professional goals is because… it’s actually NOT THEIRS! Think about it… maybe you’re in the same boat right now.
2. Are Your Professional Goals Outdated?
The next set of incorrect professional goals are outdated goals you don’t really want anymore. For example, let’s say you’re a lawyer… and a very successful one as well. Right out of law school, you set a goal to become a managing partner at a very prestigious law firm. And you have achieved it… you’ve arrived! Then as the years go by, you’ve noticed that you are not enjoying your work or career anymore. You’re overworked, you don’t get to spend anytime with your wife and kids, you even work weekends! You become dull, and maybe even grouchy amongst your peers.
So where’s all the satisfaction now of achieving your goals? Maybe at one time you did go after your professional goals… you told yourself you had to do it, but now maybe it’s something you don’t want to do anymore. It’s OUTDATED! But since you’re so comfortable in the same old routine and the familiarity of everything in your professional life, you don’t even step back to take a really close look at what you really want NOW. Whatever the reason, you’re inner or outer circumstances have changed but you’re still on the treadmill you created for yourelf… running after something you don’t really want anymore. The question is: Do you still really want this or perhaps you’ve just held on to it for so long that you “think” you still want it?
Hmmm…. something you should really think about.
3. Do You Have IMPOSSIBLE Business or Professional Goals?
Now the third reason why you are not achieving your professional goals is because… they are IMPOSSIBLE to achieve! What do I mean by that? Well, it’s exactly what I just said… it just cannot be done PERIOD! If you’re in business, maybe one of your professional goals is ‘complete customer satisfaction’. Now this may sound like a worthy goal to go after, and maybe you even think that this is the key to success in your business. But how the heck can you achieve ‘complete’ customer satisfaction with all of your customers? There’s just too many variables to consider, too many circumstances that can happen, and too many things out of your own control.
Here’s another example… make a $1 million in one year. Now to a very select few, this goal is not impossible. But to the vast majority who have not even made a six-figure income in one year yet, this is impossible! Here’s a question… why would someone sabotage themselves by setting an impossible goal for themselves?
Now here’s the thing about impossible professional goals that I want to point out… these type of goals you make are normally not made on the conscious level. I don’t want to get too deep here… but the key point I want to make is that alot of times impossible goals lie in the subconscious mind. And too many people unknowingly set themselves up for failure when they set out impossible goals and don’t achieve them.
And there you have it… 3 reasons why people don’t achieve their business and professional goals. This also holds true for personal goals as well. So take some time to examine if you have hidden, no-longer-valid goals. And if you do have them… let them go and set some new goals that you really want to go after that are worth your time and efforts.
